With the Beijing Olympics only three weeks away, the Uyghur American Association (UAA) condemns Chinese authorities' recent intense crackdown on the Uyghur people of East Turkestan (also known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region).
The Uyghur American Association (UAA) strongly protests Chinese authorities’ recent use of terrorist allegations to justify the persecution of Uyghurs, including the execution and killing of Uyghurs, in East Turkistan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region).
According to Chinese state media reports, five Uyghurs were shot to death by police in Urumchi, the regional capital of East Turkistan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) on July 9.
On Thursday, June 26, 2007, from 2 pm to 4 pm, members of the Uyghur American Association (UAA), the local Uyghur community and supporters of human rights for Uyghurs and human rights in China will gather in the park in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness about human rights abuses being committed against the Uyghur people in East Turkistan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China) and other human rights abuses taking place in the People’s Republic of China.
According to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, a total of 65 Uyghurs convicted on Olympics-related charges are due to be sentenced in late June in East Turkistan.
