Urumqi, China -- China will build a 10 billion yuan ($1.21 billion) gas pipeline
to link the resource- rich western region of Xinjiang with eastern Shanghai
as part of the government's efforts to give priority to developing western
China, the Xinhua news agency said. The pipeline is part of a larger
development plan for Xinjiang that calls for total investment of 70 billion
yuan. The plan involves 30 projects, including water conservancy,
transportation, and telecommunications, most of which would be completed by 2005 and funds will come from the central and regional governments, the
report said.
China earlier this week announced the discovery of a natural gas field in
Xinjiang's Tarim Basin which is estimated to hold reserves of 3 trillion
cubic meters.
